About Avin a Larf

Silly, irreverent people of the word unite, we have nothing to miss but our trains! Avin A Larf's mission is to promote musical comedy as a stand-alone genre and create an independent platform for emerging and established musical comedians, both online and offline. Through this website we aim to celebrate the talents and diversity of the global musical comedy community. We aim to make this site the premier destination for people who like to write, perform or enjoy comedy songs and build a creative playground for the musical comedy community.

Put yourself on the musical comedy map!

This is a map for the UK musical comedy community! Show us where you are and find out where the others are based! Send us an email with your location, name, member profile on this site and we'll put you on the map!

Don't worry, no stalking here!

Fear thee not, we're not asking you to allow strangers to zoom in on you whilst you're sitting on the john at home! You don't need to give us your exact address, just say which city, town or even region you're in and we'll plonk you somewhere randomly thereabouts! No need to expect a hooded Avin a Larf charity worker to appear on your door if you're on the map!

You can also recommend your favourite venues and we can put them up there. If you are a promoter, agent or booker, we can also put you on the map! Contact Ed at ed@musicalcomedy.co.uk.

Our origins

I set up Avin A Larf in April last year with the help of some Venture Capital investment. I'd been doing an MA in Warwick in Creative and Media Enterprises and chose to do a module on 'Cultural Entrepreneurship', where we had to come up with a new business idea within the creative industries and then present it as a pitch to a group of investors in a mock 'Dragon's Den' style. Although the exercise was supposed to be purely hypothetical, the investors took my idea seriously and supported me!

The crux of my idea is that musical comedy deserves its own independent platform, rather than being the sidekick of Stand-Up. There are so many brilliant established musical comedians around at the moment, think of current greats such as Bill Bailey, Tim Minchin, Weird Al Yankovic or Isy Suttie. With such quality out there, I felt that more should be done to celebrate the genre in it's own right. Now, for comedians whose forte is music, or who feel most comfortable in their comedy when they're channeling their energy through music, this website and Avin A Larf live events will offer a new platform for developing their careers and enable them to reach a dedicated audience.
